Why support the Center for Nonprofit Studies at NIU?

by Dr. Alicia Schatteman, Director

The Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies is an interdisciplinary center in the College of Liberal Arts and Science at Northern Illinois University. It was founded in 2010 and I joined as the first joint faculty member. For the past 12 years, the last three as director, I am amazed nearly daily at the incredible commitment of our students to make the world a better place by working with and for nonprofit organizations.  We know each and one of our majors, minors, and certificate students. Their stories and experiences led them to a calling of service, to help others find hope in a better life, in stronger communities. They are passionate and their curiosity is infectious. I truly love teaching and learning alongside them.

Many of them are first-generation college students navigating college like I was. The first time I stepped on the campus of my undergraduate university, I was registering for classes.  Like myself, our students are working their way through college, taking on student loan debt, all betting against their futures.

NNGO is raising funds for three specific areas:

  1. Scholarships of any amount allow them to catch their breath, slow down a bit, be more engaged in classes and have time to experience things on campus and in the community. Some economic freedom buys them peace of mind to dream and explore.
  2. We also know the importance of high-impact practices (HIPs) inside and outside the classroom especially experiential learning and hands-on projects that connect what they are learning to community needs.
  3. The Huskie Closet offers free used clothing to any NIU student, keeps clothing out of landfills so helps the environment, and offers volunteer experiences to serve others.

If you are in a position to help, our students are truly appreciative. They are not pursuing a career in the nonprofit sector for the money.  They want to truly make the world a better place and you can help make that sacrifice a little easier with your donation to the Huskies United campaign from June 22-23.

On behalf of our students, I thank you.

Alicia
